History of Chaipattana Foundation |
“The Chaipattana Foundation is a non-governmental organisation. All committee members have freedom to consider and initiate work activities. The King is the Honorary President of the Foundation. We are public-spirited developers joining to contribute to national and social development. Our joy comes when such progress is realized. That is truly ‘Chaipattana’ or the Victory of Development.” His Majesty the King’s royal speech delivered on July 11, 1996 2nd Committee Meeting of 1996 at the Chaipattana Building, Chitralada Palace
His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej granted an initiative for the establishment of the “Chaipattana Foundation,” of which he acts as the Honorary President. He also appointed Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn to be the Executive Chairperson. Due to regulatory requirements and budget constraints faced by government agencies, His Majesty envisaged a foundation that would serve to provide prompt, timely and necessary responses to problems affecting the Thai people through various development projects.
On 14 June, 1988, The Chaipattana Foundation was officially registered as a juristic entity under the registration number 3975. The registration was proclaimed in the Royal Gazette on 12 July, 1988. The Ministry of Finance pronounced the Chaipattana Foundation a charity organization on 8 September, 1988. This was made public in the Royal Gazette on 16 September, 1988. |
His Majesty the King was directly involved in the establishment of the Chaipattana Foundation by creating an exclusive design for its emblem which conveys significant values and purposes of the organisation. Chaisri Royal Sword, symbolizing His Majesty as the commander-in-chief of the fight to overcome all difficulties faced by the people. Krabi Tuj Flag, symbolizing victory in the struggle against suffering of the people. It leads and unites all efforts to fight for the people. Royal Conch, representing holy water refreshing the land, leading to cheerfulness and state of abundance. Missions and Operating Principles |
High effectiveness and efficiency Prompt and effective action is the key component in implementation of the royally initiated projects under the Chaipattana Foundation. Focusing on farmers who are the backbone of the country Farmers and their livelihoods are held at the centre of the Chaipattana Foundation’s development work. The Foundation aims for improving their social welfare and capacity to become self-reliant. Promoting and supporting sustainable development and self-reliance The Chaipattana Foundation promotes His Majesty the King’s principle of sustainable development. Rather than immediate results, the Foundation invests in projects that will yield long-term results and help the people to help themselves. |
Encouraging local participation The Chaipattana Foundation always works with the people whose lives will be affected by its implementation of projects. Their opinions will be listened and incorporated in the decision-making process, and they are encouraged to choose their own direction of development. Encouraging cooperation and collaboration between government and private agencies Importantly, the Chaipattana Foundation also serves as a focal point for cooperation and collaboration between government and private agencies on projects and activities aiming to alleviate poverty and improve the well-being of the farmers as well as the marginalized groups. |
Carrying out and implementing non-political projects and activities The Chaipattana Foundation has always maintained its non-political status in light of its core purpose to be non-discriminatory in carrying out its development projects to benefit the country as a whole. These principles are the bedrock of the development work carried out by the Chaipattana Foundation. As all employees work to ensure the accomplishment of these missions, “Chaipattana,” the name bestowed upon the Foundation by His Majesty the King, suitably means “Victory of Development.” Our Approach The Chaipattana Foundation implements projects and activities in line with royal initiatives. The focus is on rural development work which does not duplicate those carried out by governmental agencies. Key issues for consideration in the implementation of the projects are effectiveness, efficiency, and promptness. In short, the Chaipattana Foundation implements all activities and projects that will serve as a helping hand as well as a facilitator in the national development process. |
“…In the Chaipattana Foundation’s work, prompt actions are necessary because problems need to be tackled immediately… Such actions cannot be carried out by a government due to its complicated rules and regulations which may prevent proper and timely solutions to the problems…The Foundation implements the projects as an example, and if a government views that these projects are worthwhile, it can carry on with the implementation, or it can also apply our approach to its own projects.” His Majesty the King’s Royal Speech on 11 July 1996 Particularly, the Chaipattana Foundation assists rural people, especially farmers, and their communities with resource allocation and the necessary means for the improvement of their livelihoods. The Foundation plans and integrates activities and programs to elevate local income as well as improve a state of well-being. It also strives to promote the awareness of environmental problems and conservation of natural resources and Thai traditions. Founded in 1988, the work of the Chaipattana Foundation has generated tangible results which benefit the people andeffectively contribute to the national development process. |
